Getting Acquainted with OpenNotes: Supporting the Shift to More Transparent Documentation

Wednesday April 28, 12-1pm CT (1-2pm ET, 10-11am PT)

As of April 5, 2021, the 21st Century Cures Act will require that patients in the United States be given access to all health-related documentation in their electronic medical records. This change will impact all care providers and the daily work you do with patients. In order to address the implications of these changes, the Center for Health and Social Care Integration (CHaSCI) is offering this webinar on compliance with this mandate and recommendations for best practices around transparent documentation.

Our colleagues from OpenNotes, Executive Director Cait DesRoches, DrPH and Steve O’Neill, LICSW, BCD, JD and Eve Escalante, LCSW, Manager of Program Innovation with Social Work and Community Health at Rush University Medical Center will have a conversation around this mandate to promote improved communication and partnerships between patients and care providers and highlight the importance of documentation compliance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Provide an overview of the federal mandate of the implementation of the 21st Century Cures Act Info Blocking Rule and implications involved in daily documentation practice for care managers and other medical professionals.

  2. Recommend best practices when considering exceptions to the mandate around sharing
clinical notes and examine rules when notes are related to mental health.

  3. Demonstrate how to bolster clinical language within documentation and provide
considerations regarding how and when it’s necessary to document sensitive issues.

1.0 continuing education credits will be available to live attendees. (More details will be emailed upon registration.)
